80 years ago, on the 5th of July 1946, nude dancer Micheline Bernardini debuted the bikini in Paris. Designer Louis Réard named the swimsuit after the Bikini Atoll where the American government performed a nuclear test 4 days prior on July 1st. Bernardini is currently still alive at 98. #otd 🗃️

In 1266 a widow named Avelina le Marescal wanted to pay off some sins for herself and her late husband. And so, like you do, she donated some eels. Avelina gave the priory of Norwich all the eels paid in rent from her mill in Bywick, thus securing the monks' prayers & blessings.🗃️🧪
The men in that photograph believe they represent America’s future. The historian in me knows better than to make predictions, but the record is clear: those who have bet against Black Americans claiming their rightful place in this country have always lost. 🗃️ open.substack.com/pub/kevinmle...

Historian colleagues, can you rec a book or article using/about rumors as source material? Theorization of same? There's a few good things in my field (Russia) but I'm looking for stuff from elsewhere. 🗃️ #historiansky
It’s not that hard. If you want to do a history comic, figure out if you’re taking something that someone *painstakingly pieced together * in the archives. If so, ask to license their book OR credit them at start of book OR don’t use THE SAME TITLE as the historian you based your work on. 🗃️

For my series w/ The Great Courses, I couldn't use foot notes or end notes as it was a TV script. Instead as much as possible I shouted out the historians or archivists in the script. I added them to the optional reading list. & I asked permission if it was 1 person's work I pulled a section from 🗃️🧵
